PAPERWEIGHT CABINET - German/German
You are now confronted with a selection of 600 glass paperweights from Germany, Bohemia and the rest of Europe. The so-called paperweights from the period 1840 to 1945 were put together by the collector Peter von Brackel from Bad Honnef and made available to the Wertheim Glass Museum in 2011, initially as a permanent loan.
Von Brackel's collection begins with the "classics", which mark the beginning of paperweight production at the end of 1830/beginning of 1840: Starting in Italy, Silesia and Bohemia, they were produced shortly afterwards in France, England, Scotland and Belgium, as well as in Russia and North America. Almost all classic paperweights were created in only a few glassworks as part of their official production programme in time-consuming and complicated processes.
